We’re excited to announce our first TJL class, Shaping Jewelry in the 20th Century, a deep dive into American jewelry history in this 250th year.

Taught by Bella Neyman, NYC Jewelry Week founder, writer, curator, and jewelry historian, we will use TJL’s book collection, handle period pieces, and access primary-source material including vintage catalogues and design books.

We’ll start the course by looking at Indigenous jewelry with a visit to Mahnaz Collection, a jewelry gallery specializing in vintage and artist jewelry on Madison Avenue. The gallery holds a phenomenal selection of Indigenous jewelry, representative of the intricate stone-inlay techniques and refined silversmithing which defined the American Southwest.

Next, Neyman will introduce the field of Studio Jewelry that took root after World War II and saw jewelers explore shape and materiality in unique and innovative ways – akin to sculptures for the body. This section (from 1945-1985) will be divided into two lectures focusing on the vibrant artistic communities on the East and West Coasts.

The course will conclude with an investigation into American costume and fashion jewelry from the 1920s to the 1980s, looking at all of the major manufacturers and designers, including Trifari, Miriam Haskell, Schreiner, Mazer, Eisenberg, Nettie Rosenstein, and De Lillo.

Join us for our in-person sessions on Monday evenings from 6:00–8:00pm.
