Join us at SHOP @ TJL for tea and a gallery talk with jewelry artist Nesftaly Gomez. Nesftaly will discuss her work, her process, and the complexities of growing up as a Dominican in America.

“My jewelry can be seen as wearable art connecting to fashion that has influenced my understanding of what it means to have individual style. I often use the paisley bandana in my work because to me it represents the hip hop movement and streetstyle I saw growing up. I use specific materials such as fabric, rhinestones, and sequins that reflect American fashion and the colors that I associate with my Dominican background.”

Nesftaly Gomez was born and raised in the Bronx, New York with parents who immigrated from the Dominican Republic. She received her BA in Painting from Pratt Institute. Her jewelry brand Neftale specializes in handcrafted jewelry. Each piece is uniquely made with an interest in storytelling. Neftale jewelry reflects the vibrancy of Caribbean cultures in urban spaces. Through a fine art approach each jewelry piece is sewn together using a variety of fabric, colors, and patterns to make a statement about identity and culture. The handsewn quality of the jewelry adds a personal touch making it one of a kind. Materials are sourced both locally in New York and internationally in the Dominican Republic.
