Summer of Stories

Summer is here–and it’s storytime at TJL…

These days we’re listening, learning how to listen better, and listening more. Stories are a powerful way to connect with others–even when we (still) have to stay apart.

Here’s a lineup of opportunities coming up!

Next Wednesday, July 8th at 2:00pm, Karen Davidov will be joining the Museum of Arts and Design’s Associate Curator Barbara Gifford for a special storytelling edition of  In the MAD Loupe, celebrating the exhibition 45 Stories in Jewelry: 1947 to Now. Click to register.
(Please note, all registrants must have a verified Zoom account in order to access the program. Registration, and the Zoom account, are free.)

We’re excited to get back to The Scoop with a Virtual Ice Cream Social in August! Grab a cone, or better yet make yourself a sundae, as we listen to jewelry stories from around the country. Invite to follow. And if you’ve got a story you’ve been eager to tell, we’ll be offering a Jewelry Stories Workshop on July 21st at 7:00pm online. We’ll work on crafting your jewelry story, and our storytelling coaches will help you get it into shape for a future appearance at The Scoop. Email us at info@thejewelrylibrary.com if you’d like to join.

More great storytelling…
New York City Jewelry Week’s (NYCJW) Director of Cultural Diversity and Inclusion, the always engaging Elliot Carlyle, has just started hosting HERE WE ARE Conversations on Instagram Live (@nycjewelryweek). This series is a social media extension of NYCJW’s HERE WE ARE program initiatives to create impact and action within and outside the jewelry industry through generating awareness, empowerment, and education. The first conversation with Jennifer Gandia of Greenwich St. Jewelers was storytelling at its best–we can’t wait for the next one with celebrated HERE WE ARE photographer Stefen Pompée on July 6th!

GemX’s Gemflix series has brought a superb array of international jewelry-people together for virtual talks over the last few months. We’re especially looking forward to this Sunday’s edition (July 5th, 12:00pm EDT) in support of the Equal Justice Initiative, How the Secret Life of Jewelry Inspires Storytelling: A Conversation with Bestselling Author M.J. Rose.

And finally…
We’ve got lots of new and vintage books on our shelves, including the beautiful and mysterious HUNT which features the Estonian artist and teacher Kadri Mälk’s collection of contemporary art jewelry. Mälk’s fellow artists and friends pose in portraits alongside their favorite pieces, along with essays on the nature of collecting, the thrill of the hunt, and the unique “capacity [of jewelry] to transmit personal stories and to forge contacts between people” (Liesbeth den Besten). (Charon Kransen Arts is offering 25% off this title and many others through July 20th.)

Hope to see you soon!
Karen and Jo

P.S. If you’re in the Catskills this summer, stop by for some ice cream at our friend and The Scoop partner Mark Randall’s pop-up in Narrowsburg! blineicecream.com.
